Foundation Training for a Confident Future
We believe that the beginning of a horse’s riding journey is the most important chapter. Whether it’s a young horse being started under saddle for the first time or a previously mishandled horse needing a fresh, respectful restart, the Rahal Ranch team, led by Ali Al Ameri; is committed to laying a calm, confident, and trust-based foundation.
Who It’s For:
Owners with:
- Young or unstarted horses
- Green horses needing structured foundation work
- Previously mishandled or confused horses requiring a second start
What We Focus On
- Groundwork that builds respect and responsiveness
- Gentle, progressive introduction to tack and rider weight
- Confidence with voice aids, leg pressure, and rein cues
- Desensitization to common sounds, sights, and handling scenarios
- Re-establishing trust and clarity in horses with a troubled past
How long does it take to break in a horse?
The timeline varies depending on the horse’s temperament, age, and previous handling. On average, it may take 4 to 8 weeks for a full foundation program, but we adjust based on the horse’s pace and comfort level.
What methods do you use for starting horses under saddle?
We use trust-based, pressure-and-release techniques rooted in natural horsemanship. Our process focuses on clear communication, groundwork, desensitization, and gradual rider introduction. No harsh equipment or forceful methods are used.
Can I bring my horse back home mid-training and continue myself?
While that’s possible in some cases, we recommend completing the full program at Rahal Ranch. We also provide follow-up sessions or handover training for owners to ensure a smooth transition.
What’s the difference between restarting and breaking in?
“Breaking in” refers to starting a horse under saddle for the first time, while “restarting” involves retraining a horse that may have had poor previous experiences, trauma, or unclear foundational work. Both require different pacing and attention.
Will I be able to ride the horse myself once training is complete?
Yes. As part of our process, we ensure that owners are confident and familiar with their horse’s cues before returning home. We also offer follow-up support and riding guidance to help reinforce the horse’s training in your own setting.
